Online Poker Pro Drops Golf Lawsuit

It’s not exactly news that golf and poker go together like bread and butter. What is news is that online poker pro Dusty Schmidt lost his status as an amateur golfer for trying to mix them. Well there was also that little matter of a $1 million bet.

It all began when Schmidt offered up what he called the “One Million Dollar Challenge,” which gave anyone in the world a chance to try and beat him in a mixed competition of poker and golf.

While there were no takers on the bet, the United States Golf Association (USGA) did take notice, and stripped Schmidt of his amateur status.

Schmidt took a shot at battling the USGA in court but has given up now after already losing two decisions to try and delay the USGA’s ruling so that he could at least play in upcoming tournaments. After consulting several different attorneys, Schmidt has given up on the lawsuit.

"The USGA is pretty ingeniously designed," Schmidt said. "The way their rules are set up, they're almost impenetrable from a legal perspective. I don't think I could win with O.J.'s lawyers. No matter what angle you tried to go for, they had the loophole covered. There was just no way."

Will Darvin Moon Reject Sponsorship?

So far Darvin Moon has rejected bids from online poker sites to wear their logos. He is entering the 2009 WSOP Final Table as the chip leader and he got there without any sponsorship deals.

In an interview with Lacey Jones for Bluff, Moon explained his reason for not wearing a patch. Apparently he’s “laid back and doesn’t want to be tied to anything.”

OK, fair enough.

But there will be plenty of online poker sites who obsessively sponsor the hell out of every visible inch of players on any TV table. They will definitely be dangling plenty of carrots in front Moon over the next few months. It'll be interesting to see if he bites.

Matt Damon Says Rounders 2 a Possibility

In a recent interview with pokerlistings.com, Matt Damon and David Levien (Rounders co-writer), both indicated that a Rounders sequel might happen.

Damon, the lead in the original Rounders, said that, "Everybody would probably come back. The actors all had a really good time working together. I know Edward would want to do it; we had a blast working together. [Director] John Dahl I'm sure would like to do it."

Levien confirmed that a Rounders 2 script was in the works. "We've been concentrating on Rounders 2 lately; Ideas are percolating. It's great to know that all of the original players want to come back and do another one."

Don't hold your breath for Rounders 2 though. If they're just letting ideas perculate at this point, the film itself will take years to hit theaters if it gets made. So while you're waiting to watch a poker story, you might as well be living a poker story, with Unabomber Poker's online poker room.
